Texas plans $226M expansion of EV charging network

October 26, 2026

Texas continues to lead the charge in expanding its available electric vehicle (EV) charging network, culminating in awarding $226 million as part of Phase 2 of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program.

The $226 million pumped into EV infrastructure will help develop 321 EV charging stations across Texas. The sites will cover 264 metropolitan planning organization areas and 57 county seats.

The federal funding goes a long way toward covering ground needed to realize the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) vision for full deployment. As part of its application for Phase 2 NEVI funding, the department detailed 547 proposed stations along alternative fuel corridors amounting to a total construction cost of $457.7 million. However, from that amount, only $329 million were selected to proceed into the planning phase.

The typical design for EV charging infrastructure will feature stations with at least four ports and power sharing between dispensers. Each station has a total power footprint of at least 300 kilowatts (kW) and is designed to fuel multiple vehicles at once. Many of the rural-area installations will provide critical charging capabilities for local farm and work trucks alongside off-interstate travelers, bridging notable gaps in the state’s EV charging network infrastructure.

While Phase 2 development hasn’t kicked off yet, TxDOT has been well underway with Phase 1 initiatives for years. The state has already built and opened 22 stations and plans to round that out with five additional sites by the end of the year. The department has set its sights to develop and deploy 30 new EV charging stations throughout 2027.
