Strategic Partnerships, Inc. salutes you, public sector officials: The Profiles in Power section spotlights and recognizes powerful figures across America’s public sector landscape. This week’s Profile in Power is Mayor Lacey Beaty in Beaverton, Oregon.
My public career highlights and education
I’ve had the honor of serving as Mayor of Beaverton since 2021, after working in public health and community advocacy. I also hold a graduate degree in organizational management, which has been incredibly helpful in navigating change and leading through complex challenges. I’m also a U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq. My path into public service has always been grounded in serving people and strengthening community.
What I like best about public service
What I love most is that you can see the impact up close. Local government is where decisions turn into real change, whether it’s housing, parks or public safety. It’s also deeply human work. You’re not serving abstract ideas, you’re serving your neighbors.
Some of the best advice I have ever received
“Decisions are made by those who show up.” It’s simple, but it’s shaped how I lead. Being present, listening, and staying engaged, especially when things are hard, is what builds trust and moves communities forward.
Something I wish more people knew about my division of government
I serve in a council-manager form of government, which means the mayor and council set policy, and a professional city manager oversees day-to-day operations. It’s a system designed for accountability and expertise, but it can be confusing. Clear roles help us serve the community better.
A current project or initiative that I am working on
We’re doing some exciting work in Beaverton right now, including our Downtown Loop to better connect people and places, and a new nonprofit incubator to support community-led solutions. We’re focused on creating a city where innovation, small businesses and community organizations can grow and succeed together.
One thing outside of government service people may not know about me
I’m pretty disciplined about staying active, it’s just part of who I am. I like to start my day moving, whether that’s a workout or getting outside. It helps me reset, stay focused and show up better for the work and for the community.
