Strategic Partnerships, Inc. salutes you, public sector officials: The Profiles in Power section spotlights and recognizes powerful figures across America’s public sector landscape. This week’s Profile in Power is of DK Wesley, city manager for the city of Asheville, North Carolina.
My public career highlights and education
Since undergraduate school at the University of Central Arkansas, I have pursued public administration, aiming to passionately operationalize policy. I obtained a Master of Public Administration from the University of North Texas and spent the majority of my early career centering around budget management, operational analysis, and municipal court administration (i.e., technology, finance/budget, human resources, etc.), with the City of Fort Worth, Texas. Following a 17-year journey in Dallas-Fort Worth municipal government, I transitioned into county roles in Illinois and North Carolina. As Buncombe County’s Assistant Manager, I honed my leadership, later becoming Asheville’s City Manager in 2026, committed to excellence in public service.
What I like best about public service
Public service is my calling, grounded in serving the greater good above personal gain. I chose local government for its proximity to people, which fosters real connection and ensures my decisions align with community needs. I’m energized by solving complex, ever-changing challenges, creating lasting, systematic impact for future generations.
Some of the best advice I have ever received
I’ve been blessed by amazing mentors. Early on, my director advised me never to be an “armchair analyst.” She taught me that making well-informed decisions requires spending time in the field with the departments I support, building essential relationships for difficult conversations. Today, I remain intentional — never an “armchair” manager.
Something I wish more people knew about my division of government
Asheville is known as a vacation destination, but our greatest asset is our residents. Our community’s strong culture of civic engagement, passion, and participation adds complexity to decision-making, yet makes the work of leading this city deeply meaningful. We are shaping a place where people feel truly connected.
A current project or initiative that I am working on
Following Tropical Storm Helene, our city has prioritized resilient infrastructure restoration and long-term recovery. We launched the Anti-Displacement and Affordable Housing project, a cross-departmental initiative aimed at identifying and implementing actions to address affordable housing and minimize displacement. Staff are collaboratively tackling these complex challenges, energized by our progress.
One thing outside of government service people may not know about me
Beyond my passion for strategy and problem-solving, I am driven by storytelling, creating inspiring spaces, and fostering connection. Raised by strong, loving matriarchs, I embrace growth, imagination, and faith. I am a dreamer at heart, believing that hopefulness is the foundation of all good things both personal and professional.
