Michael Hart: Empowering communities we serve

Strategic Partnerships, Inc. salutes you, public sector officials: The Profiles in Power section spotlights and recognizes powerful figures across America’s public sector landscape. This week’s Profile in Power is of Michael Hart, city manager for La Junta, Colorado.

My public career highlights and education

I currently serve as city manager in La Junta, CO. With nearly 18 years in public administration, both elected and appointed, I am a servant leader who believes in empowering others and fostering a culture of trust and communication. I hold a master’s in public administration from Oklahoma University and I’m a proud US Army Veteran, serving tours in Afghanistan and Iraq.

What I like best about public service

I like being able to help people understand how government works and how it works for them. I enjoy interacting with people. Government, especially at the local level, directly impacts those we serve. It is important that they know who you are and can approach us when they have issues.

Some of the best advice I have ever received

Listen more than you speak. Never take life too seriously, after all, no one gets out alive. When you stop having fun, it is time to find something else to do.

Something I wish more people knew about my division of government

The decisions made at the local level impact us just the same as our residents. Whether it is a council or administrative decision, we are affected by it as well. There is no immunity. We are all in this together. It is your neighbors, coworkers, and fellow citizens working every day for a better future.

A current project or initiative that I am working on

Excited to be wrapping up the rehab on our hybrid courts at City Park. Additionally, we will resurface the runway at our airport this summer. Happy to be opening a new grocery store in town as well.

One thing outside of government service people may not know about me

I am a normal guy. I enjoy simple things, including spending time with family and friends. Coffee, meaningful conversations, laughing, and enjoying the moment are vital. I always say, “If it’s not fun, I am not going.”
