EPA’s new permitting map seeks to reduce regulatory confusion

May 13, 2026

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has unveiled an interactive map designed to streamline access to regulatory authorities across its 10 regions.

The new Geo Platform-based EPA Permitting Authority Map allows officials and other stakeholders to select any state to see whether a state, federal, local or tribal entity oversees permitting and enforcement for specific environmental programs. A sidebar displays relevant federal EPA activities, and a drop-down menu identifies the responsible authority by region.

For example, clicking Texas and selecting Clean Water Act programs shows that the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality administers the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System base program, except on federal waters and tribal lands, where EPA Region 6 takes over.

EPA officials say the tool will help all types of stakeholders quickly determine the direction of a project along with ensuring projects stay compliant and timely. The map also aligns with a presidential memorandum directing agencies to modernize permitting technology to reduce paperwork, cut backlogs, increase transparency and eliminate duplicated processes.

The map is available on the EPA’s website.
