The U.S. National Science Foundation has awarded the first grants through a new scholarship program to prepare college students for careers combining artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.
The CyberAICorps Scholarship for Service program is a competitive grants initiative that supports colleges and universities preparing students to detect cybersecurity threats and use artificial intelligence to respond to increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks.
AI is changing both cyber defense and cyber threats, so the curriculum combines subjects that were traditionally taught separately. By integrating the coursework, students will gain skills to help protect critical government, defense, energy and healthcare systems.
The awards emphasize hands-on learning through faculty mentoring, research, laboratory work, internships and capstone projects to prepare students for cybersecurity roles in government.
The awards support programs at 14 colleges and universities across the country that integrate artificial intelligence into cybersecurity education through research, scholarships and hands-on training.
Award recipients include Arizona State University; Augusta University; California State University, San Bernardino; Michigan Technological University; New Jersey Institute of Technology; Old Dominion University; Texas A&M University; the University of Central Florida; the University of New Haven; the University of Rhode Island; the University of West Florida; the University of Texas at Dallas; the University of Texas at El Paso; and Vanderbilt University.
