Denver’s Regional Transportation District (RTD) is advancing 65 infrastructure investments through the lens of its strategic initiative, “Building a Better RTD,” part of the agency’s broader strategic plan that emphasizes coordinating the timing of projects to reduce disruptions to service.
The strategy involves sequencing projects so that the same areas are not constantly at various stages of construction. When possible, RTD will combine multiple projects in the same area at the same time to avoid multiple stages of disruption. The agency will also schedule work to minimize its impact on riders and let passengers know ahead of time when changes in service will occur.
The initiative includes 65 infrastructure investments that RTD is advancing this year across its bus and rail systems. The investments cover a range of work, including station improvements, maintenance and reconstruction of rail, bridges, power systems and grade crossings. The work also includes pedestrian bridges and projects intended to increase transit capacity.
Among the investments being advanced this year are 20 station enhancement efforts. The station work includes improvements to stairs and elevators, platform access, parking lots and landscaping. Another major investment is the multi-year Downtown Rail Reconstruction Project, which is rebuilding portions of RTD’s original rail system to improve safety and reliability.
RTD is also coordinating with regional partners, including the Colorado Department of Transportation, the city and county of Denver and others, on 15 infrastructure investments. The work includes pedestrian bridges, accessibility improvements at bus stops and support for Bus Rapid Transit projects. One of the investments involves planning and designing a pedestrian bridge near the future National Women’s Soccer Stadium in Denver.
RTD officials say the Building a Better RTD initiative will advance the investments planned for 2026 while improving safety, reliability, access, capacity and customer experience.
