The Department of Energy (DOE) has announced that its Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office (HGEO) has established a cutting-edge center to secure affordable, reliable and safe energy.
The Geothermal Center of Excellence (CoE) will pull from an array of expertise operating as part of a world-class consortium of scientists, researchers and leaders. These experts come from the DOE’s portfolio of National Laboratories and will prioritize efforts to develop solutions for gigawatt-scale geothermal energy, resource discovery and commercial development.
The consortium will include:
- DOE leadership.
- Elected officials.
- National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) leadership.
- National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) leadership.
- Laboratory staff.
- Industry representatives.
The NLR will lead the consortium, using its campus in Golden, Colo., as headquarters. The NETL will provide support for research, development and discovery efforts. The consortium will collectively work together to outline the center’s goals, priorities and holistic vision for advancement.
Going forward, the center will operate as the primary entry point for industry to connect with the agency’s National Laboratory network. As a vehicle for driving geothermal-centric technology innovation forward, the CoE will further improve interlaboratory collaboration and expand geothermal deployment throughout the nation.
An invite-only Industry Advisory Board will help bridge the gap between National Laboratories and industry. The board will provide insight, advice and recommendations regarding industry-relevant geothermal research needs, streamline industry-lab partnerships and guide overall priorities for the center.
