Adam RollinsMorgan State University, located in Baltimore, recently revealed the first look at its future state-of-the-art Science and Research Complex that will house science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs. The estimated cost for the eight-story, 246,000-square-foot building is $342 million.
The building will provide numerous spaces to facilitate scientific research and innovation. Collaborative teaching and research spaces will include cutting-edge biology and chemistry labs. The complex will also include a “clean room,” which provides a controlled, sterile environment for scientific research.
The design will incorporate information-technology spaces with cutting-edge work centers and computing labs. The computer labs will complement traditional instructional spaces provided through tutoring and learning centers. In addition, the facility will integrate remote and hybrid technology for seamless collaboration and communication throughout the complex.
The rooftop will feature a 3,000-square-foot environmental and botanical greenhouse. It will be integrated with the sustainable green roof on the facility’s terrace as part of the structure’s sustainable, efficient and resilient modern architecture. The design also features a gray water reclamation system.
To provide space for the Science and Research Complex, the university is demolishing the Washington Service Center and associated facilities. The demolition will remove, replace and relocate fuel tanks and fuel-line piping. The complex will be built on the former site of the Washington Service Center. Demolition is ongoing and expected to conclude November 2024.
