New sports fields and student athletics upgrades are coming to the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), following a May 19 announcement unveiling the multi-phased project to enhance Roadrunner Field and surrounding facilities. The university anticipates the start of construction in early 2027.
UTSA officials outlined the project while providing a first look at renderings of the new baseball facility. The project, which is currently in the planning and design phase, would represent up to $20 million in capital investments from the university.
The baseball facility overhaul is part of a larger athletics enhancement program, Bold Champions. Through the initiative, UTSA announced in 2024 that it was investing an estimated $57 million into athletics facilities and capital projects over five years, including baseball and softball player development centers, a nutrition performance center and a covered football pavilion.
The project’s first phase primarily focuses on the development of a new Baseball Development Center. The center would add new locker rooms, a student-athlete lounge, equipment areas, batting cages and pitching development spaces. Additional spaces include an athletic training room, coaches locker rooms and umpire locker rooms.
Project activities would also prioritize upgrading fan amenities. Some of the planned enhancements feature premium hospitality and seating areas, upgraded concessions, improved restrooms, social gathering areas and fan-focused spaces designed to build a stronger fan atmosphere.
The university is also planning additional athletics upgrades as part of the Bold Champions plan. Beyond the baseball facilities, UTSA is touting the construction of a new basketball and volleyball training facility, plans for a softball player development center, a nutrition center and continued improvements to football practice facilities to enhance student athletics across campus.
UTSA officials will provide additional updates to the project later this year as planning progresses and milestones are achieved. Project scope and initial renderings are available on UTSA’s website.
