Connecticut invests $20M to enhance Hartford Innovation Center

August 18, 2026

Connecticut state officials announced a $20 million investment earlier this month to develop a flagship urban workforce campus for the Hartford Innovation Center.

The Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) will deliver the funding through the Connecticut Innovation Clusters Program. The initiative is designed to create physical spaces that integrate next-generation technologies – such as AI and quantum computing – with key innovative industries. These industries include, but are not limited to, biotechnology, financial technology, insurance technology and advanced manufacturing.

The 100,000-square-foot facility will be located in downtown Hartford, providing a centralized hub to encourage forward-thinking innovators to collaborate on innovative uses and implementation of AI technologies. The state piloted the center in 2025 at an interim location, where each floor was leased to an operator.

The new campus will include collaborative labs, classrooms and project spaces to support the state’s innovation economy. A wide variety of participants will be welcomed at the center as it provides a centralized site to promote accelerated AI adoption in critical industries and the development of real-world solutions. Groups the center will cater to include:

  • Workers seeking practical pathways to better careers and looking for a place to build a professional network.
  • Students and faculty from Connecticut AI Alliance (CAIA) member institutions and future academic partners who need predictable access to industry projects and modern tools.
  • Employers seeking academic support and reliable environments to test new tools.
  • Startups and entrepreneurs requiring structured technical environments and proximity to corporate partners.
  • Public agencies seeking responsible, measurable modernization.

The CAIA will provide academic and industry leadership, while a nonprofit will oversee finances and operations. Supported by both public and private investors, the center will serve as a multi-tenant workforce training facility to expand skill building and AI adoption for small businesses.
