The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) has launched an intradepartmental task force to coordinate space policy activities and implement federal space-centric policies.
The Space Policy Administration, Coordination and Execution (SPACE) Task Force will represent USDOT in executing actions to expand launch infrastructure, streamline regulation, better integrate the airspace and coordinate space policy.
The task force is a keystone success in realizing the recently released National Space Transportation Policy. Published recently, the policy is a pivotal order to establish space-driven goals, space launch and re-entry infrastructure, space transportation programs, a space transportation industrial base, market access and international collaboration.
Going forward, the SPACE Task Force will spearhead and coordinate a unified commercial space transportation strategy. This effort will prioritize bolstering national security, strengthening the nation’s economic competitiveness and advancing innovation to position the United States as a global space pioneer and leader.
The announcement will spur additional investment in space-related infrastructure, organization and deployment. The task force represents the federal government’s latest move to secure a strong space transportation industry, following notable other key efforts to ensure America leads the global pack in capitalizing on associated investments and strategies.
Other recent efforts include:
- Launching an initiative to develop space launch routes.
- Investing in commercial space facility roadways.
- Issuing a Request for Information (RFI) for where to build spaceports.
- Activating an initiative to streamline commercial space licensing.
