University of Kentucky advances hospital expansions in Kentucky, Ohio

October 29, 2026

The University of Kentucky (UK) Board of Trustees has signed off on a series of projects worth $335 million to improve patient care facilities across three campuses. Project plans now have the green light for construction.

Of the three projects, the UK King’s Daughters Main Patient Tower Expansion project takes up the bulk of the funding with a total $200 million cost. The project will expand the hospital campus in Ashland, predominantly focused on building three additional floors to the main tower. Once completed, the expansion will add roughly 150 beds.

The main hospital campus will spend another $100 million on a sweeping set of improvements to various buildings. Plans include renovating roughly 18,000 square feet of the fourth floor next to the Cardiovascular Operating Room. The renovation will help increase capacity for the operating rooms while adding another hybrid operating room, Post Anesthesia Care Unit rooms and Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit beds.

The project calls for renovating another 8,500 square feet for inpatient pediatrics, converting existing space to accommodate a nurse’s station and expanding bed capacity to a 12-bed unit. The university will renovate 26,000 square feet to upgrade and expand the Main Operating Room. Designed to improve access to surgical services, the expansion will provide more space for existing operating rooms to make way for an increase in robotic procedures and more complex surgeries. Once completed, the space will have up to six additional operating rooms and pre-operative and post-anesthesia care unit recovery spaces.

Additional project components include renovating around 8,300 square feet in the labor and delivery unit to standardize design and flow with the mother-baby unit. Finally, the project calls for renovating approximately 23,000 square feet to expand space for lab services, providing additional space and availability for automation and efficiency in testing.

The remaining $35 million will support various improvements and expansion at the UK King’s Daughters Ohio location. Work will include:

  • Designing the expansion of the emergency room and urgent care.
  • Expanding and renovating diagnostic testing services.
  • Expanding ambulatory and procedural services for better access and care.
