The Port of Seattle is planning significant improvements to the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, following the public unveiling of a new airport infrastructure plan. The port will seek public feedback on 31 near-term projects as part of the $4.9 billion improvement plan seeking to wholistically expand Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
The proposal calls for a new multi-level passenger terminal on the north side of the airport. The approximately 575,000-square-foot building would sit east of a new gate concourse.
The port is specifically seeking feedback on a draft environmental impact statement for the project. The public is invited to respond through July 21.
Potential projects include a new second terminal with 19 gates that will improve efficiency, safety, access to the airport, and new facilities for airport partners, the Port of Seattle said.
The expansion would also include a new ground-level transportation hub intended to improve connections between the airport and public transit. Airport officials said the facility could provide an enclosed pedestrian connection and a moving walkway linking light rail passengers to terminal facilities.
Inside the terminal, plans call for baggage handling and screening facilities below ground, a baggage claim level for arriving passengers, an intermediate level connected to a new parking garage and commercial curbside area, and a departures level with passenger check-in counters and security screening checkpoints.
Design work for individual projects will not be completed until after environmental review has been concluded, the port said. The port said it was expecting to have the review finalized by the end of 2026.
The Port’s goal is to have the projects either complete or under construction by 2032.
Major improvements under the $4.9 billion plan also include:
- Airfield updates to improve safety and efficiency
- Increased fuel storage
- Off-site air cargo facilities
- New roads to connect existing and new facilities
