The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has launched a project seeking to integrate quantum sensing, networking and computing into a single operational system for real-world applications.
Quantum technologies enable sensors to detect unprecedented levels of detail while allowing computers to solve highly complex problems.
By bringing these three capabilities together for the first time, NSF officials said Project Triad will move quantum technology out of the lab and put them to work in the safety, healthcare, energy and manufacturing industries.
Project Triad takes a systematic approach to identifying which quantum breakthroughs are ready to scale and accelerating the most promising ideas from lab to market.
Uses could include GPS-independent navigation, secure communications, advanced medical imaging, personalized treatments and more efficient detection of underground natural resources.
Project Triad includes three connected programs that bring together government, industries and private industry:
- The NSF National Quantum Virtual Laboratory will develop proof-of-concept integrated quantum systems for testing and experimentation.
- NSF X-Labs will support milestone-based research focused on technologies including photonics and quantum interconnects.
- NSF Quantum+X will collaborate with industry to identify commercial applications across sectors such as energy, finance, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.
