New Jersey unveils plan to improve transit service, facilities and infrastructure

Top state officials in New Jersey announced a new plan to upgrade the state’s public transportation.  

The governor has called for the creation of a Rapid Action Plan that will implement improvements to NJ TRANSIT, New Jersey’s public transportation provider for buses, trains and light rail.  

The new plan aims to meet rider experience and customer service demands by targeting four priority areas of improvement:  

  • Accessibility at NJ TRANSIT-owned facilities, including elevators, escalators, stairs, signage, and boarding areas.   
  • Public safety, including lighting, security cameras, and law enforcement presence at stations and stops. 
  • Digital experience, including the mobile app, website, and reliability of real-time service information.  
  • Cleanliness of stations, stops, and vehicles.  

Infrastructure upgrades are set to include repairing and upgrading elevators and escalators at transit stations to accommodate disabilities and improved lighting, cameras and surveillance technology in efforts to improve public safety.  

Technology upgrades include the debut of NJ TRANSIT app improvements that will allow users to use GPS to track buses and trains and develop a Unified Customer Communication System for riders to receive customer service.  

NJ TRANSIT is the third largest public transit system in the country serving 225,000 passengers a year; the agency’s 2026 fiscal year budget is $3.1 billion.
