The state of New York has opened a Request for Applications for more than $62 million in funding for local governments and nonprofits to make housing safe, affordable and accessible for veterans, older adults and residents with disabilities.
Administered by New York State Homes and Community Renewal, the funding supports programs that rehabilitate homes to be sold to low- and moderate-income buyers. It also provides rental and down payment assistance for eligible households.
The funding is available through eight programs. The largest portion, $20 million, will go to NYS HOME to support the acquisition or rehabilitation of single-family homes or manufactured homes for households with incomes at or below 80 percent of area median income. It also provides rental assistance for households at or below 60 percent of area median income.
The Community Development Block Grant program will allocate $15 million to finance programs that renovate owner-occupied single-family homes and other eligible activities benefiting low- and moderate-income households.
Other programs supported with the funding include HOME Homebuyer Development, which will provide funding for the substantial rehabilitation or new construction of up to four single-family homes.
Access to Home supports accessibility upgrades to homes of residents with disabilities.
Access to Home for Heroes will support accessibility upgrades for homes of veterans with disabilities.
Access to Home for Medicaid Members will provide assistance for accessibility updates in homes of Medicaid members with disabilities.
The Mobile and Manufactured Home Replacement program will help homeowners replace dilapidated mobile and manufactured homes on property they own.
The RESTORE program will help older adults make necessary repairs that address code violations and safety hazards.
The funding is part of the state’s $25 billion five-year housing plan to create and preserve 100,000 affordable homes.
Applications for Access to Home, Access to Home for Heroes, Access to Home for Medicaid Members, Mobile and Manufactured Home Replacement and RESTORE are due by 4 p.m. Sept. 3. Applications for NYS HOME are due by 4 p.m. Sept. 17, while CDBG Housing applications are due by 4 p.m. Sept. 23. Applications for HOME Homebuyer Development will be accepted on a rolling basis through Oct. 30, or earlier if all funds are committed.
