Larry Flynn named Montana Department of Transportation director

October 6, 2026

Larry Flynn has been promoted to assume his role as the next director of the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT).

The appointment serves as the capstone of Flynn’s career following more than 30 years with the department. He most recently held the role of deputy director, first stepping into the position in 2023.

Prior to serving as deputy director, he was MDT’s chief financial officer and head of the Administration Division for a combined 16 years.

Flynn’s in-depth experience handling and overseeing the department’s operations, finances and policy development have unequivocably given him an advantage in leading MDT. He will assume the mantle from outgoing MDT Director Chris Dorrington.

Flynn graduated from Montana State University-Bozeman with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management.
