MARAD opens $35M grant program to revitalize small shipyards nationwide

April 8, 2026

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) has launched a $35 million Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to revitalize small shipyards across the nation. Applications are due by May 11.

The Small Shipyard Grant Program will award capital improvement projects designed to increase efficiency, improve operations and support effective ship building, repair and reconfiguration. Grants can also be used to support maritime training programs to enhance technical skills and operational productivity.

The only eligible applications for the program will be operating companies for small businesses in the shipyard industry. These yards must be located in a single geographic location and may not have more than 1,200 employees. Qualifying shipyards must build, repair or reconfigure vessels that are either:

  • 40 feet in length or greater for commercial or government use.
  • 100 feet in length or greater for non-commercial vessels.

Each applicant may submit one application that contains multiple projects. Grants will exceed no more than 75% of the project’s estimated cost, leaving the recipient to cover the rest. In addition, MARAD will award no more than 25% of the total available funding to a single company.

All submissions should include a detailed description of the shipyard, including its location, facilities, years in operation and ownership. Applications should also describe the projects in detail, provide the project need, include an analysis of how the initiative will contribute to competitive operations and an itemized list of project costs among other details.
