GSA explores upgrades to multibillion-dollar payment program

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has released a Request for Information (RFI) seeking feedback on the next generation of the GSA SmartPay program. Submissions are due by June 19. 

GSA SmartPay is a government charge card and related payment services program that handles billions of dollars in transactions across roughly 250 federal agencies, eligible organizations and Tribal organizations. The program enables the U.S. government’s purchasing power while protecting its assets. 

Some items of interest featured in the RFI include: 

  • Industry-identified risks for providing services to the government. 
  • Scalability. 
  • Government shutdowns. 
  • Government financial systems. 
  • Individually billed accounts. 
  • Cloud computing and security. 
  • Hierarchy management. 
  • Innovation and emerging technologies. 
  • Data and reporting. 

The current master contract for the service is slated to end Nov. 29, 2031. The agency plans to innovate the service, leveraging industry feedback to improve overall usability while integrating business intelligence features and optimizing operational controls. Feedback given through the RFI will help guide the GSA’s next steps while illuminating certain aspects of the current master contract.
