FTA awards $388M for bus, transit infrastructure projects

March 23, 2026

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has revealed a total distribution of $388.3 million to support 34 projects focused on improving public transit for buses and related infrastructure.

The Fiscal Year 2026 Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Competitive Program (Bus Competitive Program) will award projects that replace, rehabilitate, buy, build or lease bus-related facilities or buses, vans and related equipment. The FTA chose its recipients out of 479 project proposals, with at least 15% of the amount going toward projects in rural areas.

A selection of projects receiving the largest awards include:

  • The Central New York Regional Transportation Authority will receive $28.8 million to build a bus maintenance, storage and administrative facility.
  • The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority will use $27.2 million to buy replacement buses and rehabilitate two operations and maintenance facilities.
  • The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway & Transportation District, California, will receive $25.6 million to relocate a bus transit center.
  • Petersburg Area Transit, Virginia, will leverage $23.8 million to buy replacement buses and build an operations and maintenance facility.
  • The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority will use $21.6 million to rehabilitate three bus facilities.
  • Foothill Transit, California, will spend $20.8 million to build a mobility hub.
  • The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority will receive $20 million to expand a bus facility.

Recipients must collaborate with their FTA Regional Office to submit a grant application for their projects to quickly obligate funds. These applications must feature eligible activities outlined in the original proposals and be delivered through the FTA’s Transit Award Management System.

If the allocated amounts are insufficient to cover all project costs, recipients must either reduce scope or scale the project to ensure the funding covers a complete phase or usable segment. They may also match funding to complete projects.
