EDA bets on regional hubs to strengthen U.S. technology leadership

The U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) intends to invest $169 million in six federally designated Tech Hubs to accelerate the development and commercialization of emerging technologies. The Tech Hubs will advance the nation’s economic competitiveness, energy security and domestic manufacturing, according to federal officials. 

Established in 2023, the Tech Hubs Program was created to strengthen regional innovation ecosystems by bringing together industry, research institutions, workforce organizations and government agencies to develop technologies with the potential to become globally competitive. Since the program’s launch, the EDA has supported designated hubs through planning and implementation awards that advance commercialization, workforce development, supply chain capacity and other regional initiatives.  

The six hubs selected for this round of implementation funding represent regional partnerships focused on technologies considered essential to the nation’s long-term economic and technological leadership. 

The Critical Minerals and Materials for Advanced Energy Tech Hub, which will receive the largest award at $38 million, will build on Missouri’s mineral resources and hydrometallurgical refining expertise to increase domestic production of critical minerals used in lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries. The funding will support efforts to develop commercially viable processes that recover and refine critical minerals while reducing costs and supply chain risks. 

The Advanced Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Tech Hub in Virginia will receive about $16 million to strengthen domestic pharmaceutical production by creating an integrated commercialization network that helps move new medicines from research into large-scale U.S. manufacturing. Led by the Alliance for Building Better Medicine, the hub brings together manufacturers, universities and workforce partners to expand advanced manufacturing technologies, strengthen the pharmaceutical supply chain and reduce the nation’s reliance on overseas production. 

The Bloch Quantum Tech Hub will receive $30 million to build a nationally competitive quantum technology industry across Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin by connecting world-class research institutions with private industry. Led by the Chicago Quantum Exchange, the hub brings together partners including the University of Chicago, Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center, Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park, Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, IonQ, IBM and One Region Northwest Indiana to accelerate the development, commercialization and manufacturing of quantum technologies. 

The Forest Bioproducts Advanced Manufacturing Tech Hub in Maine will receive $20 million to expand Maine’s advanced forest products industry and strengthen manufacturing capacity through infrastructure improvements and workforce development. Led by the University of Maine, the hub brings together the Maine Technology Institute, state agencies, industry partners and workforce organizations to scale innovative wood-based products and manufacturing processes, bringing new technologies to market more quickly. 

The Intermountain-West Nuclear Energy Corridor Tech Hub will receive $31 million to accelerate the deployment of advanced nuclear reactors by strengthening the nuclear energy supply chain and advancing next-generation technologies. The Idaho-based hub brings together 45 partners across Idaho and Wyoming to strengthen the region’s role in the global small modular reactor market as demand for electricity continues to grow. Led by Idaho National Laboratory, one of the nation’s leading nuclear research facilities, the hub will help move advanced nuclear technologies from research into commercial deployment through partnerships with manufacturers, utilities and other private-sector organizations. 

The Kansas City BioSecure Manufacturing Hub will receive $34 million to expand domestic biomanufacturing capacity for biologic medicines and other biotechnology products. Led by BioNexus KC, the hub will leverage the region’s concentration of animal health, nutrition and biotechnology companies, along with its strengths in biodefense and biosecurity, to move human and animal biologic discoveries, including vaccines and cancer therapies, from research into commercial manufacturing. 

Although each hub focuses on a different technology, all six share the same goal: bringing together research, industry and workforce partners to move new technologies from development into commercial production. Together, the hubs are designed to strengthen regional innovation ecosystems while expanding U.S. manufacturing capacity and competitiveness in industries considered critical to the nation’s future.
