The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has announced that it will help the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) evolve its commuter train infrastructure by investing $1.3 billion in the FrontRunner 2X Commuter Rail Line project. Construction is expected to begin in 2027.
Delivered through the Capital Investment Grants (CIG) program, the federal investment covers 80 percent of the project’s total cost. With most of the expenses now in tow, Utah authorities will be able to further advance development on the multi-billion initiative.
The project vision calls for expanding rail availability, frequency and capacity by 60% along the 82-mile line. Supported work will include promoting engineering activities, demolition and utility relocation, property acquisition, procurement of equipment and materials and other critical, non-construction expenses.
The project will support the installation of 11 segments of double-tracking, totaling 26.1 miles. Additional work will focus on realigning a segment, building an infill station with 325 parking spaces, procuring 10 diesel multiple unit train sets, building a vehicle maintenance facility and upgrading signals.
Once the improvements are completed, FrontRunner 2X service will offer 15-minute service during peak periods and 30-minute service throughout the rest of the day.
