Massachusetts rail investments support Berkshire Flyer, West-East service

October 20, 2026

Massachusetts is laying the foundation for better, broader rail service as the state’s Department of Transportation (MassDOT) signed an agreement to establish permanent Berkshire Flyer service with key infrastructure investments. Amtrak will further support quality rail operations using a portion of its $2 billion federal funding share to procure and deploy state-of-the-art trainsets for intercity passenger rail services.

MassDOT recently announced that it finalized a public-private partnership (P3) agreement with CSX to build and expand rail infrastructure improvements in Pittsfield. The infrastructure will enable the previously limited seasonal Berkshire Flyer line to provide permanent seasonal passenger rail service.

To that end, the department dedicated $31 million in its Fiscal Years 2027-2031 Capital Investment Plan to advance the project. MassDOT will build a siding alongside various track improvements in the Pittsfield area in addition to conducting a feasibility review of a new platform at Pittsfield Station.

Once completed, the new infrastructure will increase rail capacity and reduce conflicts between passenger and freight operations. Not only will the project support permanent seasonal weekend service, but it will also serve as the groundwork for future passenger rail expansion in western Massachusetts.

The project further fulfills the state’s Compass Rail vision – an ongoing effort to establish and sustain an intercity and interstate rail network composed of multiple Amtrak-operated routes along core urban corridors. The Berkshire Flyer line – which to this point has been operating as a pilot service – will offer a permanent connection between Pittsfield and New York City.

The Compass Rail vision will also benefit from the recent $2 billion investment in upgrading Amtrak fleet vehicles. The authority will improve and expand operations across multiple states, including Massachusetts, by procuring new Siemens Airo trainsets. The modern trains will be more comfortable than previous models, offering amenities such as spacious seating, power outlets, 5G Wi-Fi, bike storage, improved accessibility and passenger information systems.

The trainsets are planned to operate along the Berkshire Flyer route, with expectations to spread them to the upcoming West-East Rail service. This future corridor will provide passenger rail across state lines, connecting Boston, Springfield and New Haven as part of its first phase.
