FHWA opens nearly $3B for bridge modernization projects

May 20, 2026

Federal transportation officials are making nearly $3 billion available to improve and modernize bridge infrastructure nationwide. The funding announcement, made by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), will ensure local and state government have the funding to plan, design and deliver new bridge projects.

The FHWA Bridge Investment Program supports the repair, replacement, rehabilitation, preservation or protection of poor condition bridges to ensure the safer movement of people and goods. The new funding strategy of allowing local governments and municipalities to apply is intended to cut down on the red tape and delays to get needed projects completed.

Local governments are encouraged to apply directly through the Federal Highway Administration to secure funds to plan and repair bridges.

Grants cover up to 80% of project costs for planning and smaller bridge projects, and up to 50% for large bridge projects exceeding $100 million. Smaller bridge project grants range from $2.5 million to $100 million.

The FHWA will accept applications for planning grants until June 15, with smaller bridge project applications due June 29.

Federal officials state that 27 states have already met the statutory requirement, having received funding for at least one large bridge or two bridge projects. States not yet on that list still have a legal guarantee of minimum funding if they submit a qualified application before the deadline.
