The Port of Duluth-Superior in Minnesota has received $27.5 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration for a terminal expansion project in Duluth.
The funding, delivered through the federal Port Infrastructure Development Program, will be supported by an additional $8.4 million match by state and local entities.
The project includes reconstruction of approximately 1,150 linear feet of dock wall, demolition of former grain elevators and redevelopment of 7.5 acres of laydown space. Work also includes installation of new water service and a stormwater management system.
Officials with the Duluth Seaway Port Authority said the project will help halt deterioration of aging dock walls, improve safety and expand laydown space for future growth.
The port handled 31.7 million tons of cargo in the year cited in the application, including iron ore, cement, wheat, oats, beet pulp pellets, breakbulk and containerized freight. The Port of Duluth-Superior is the largest tonnage port on the Great Lakes and ranks among the nation’s top 20 ports.
