The General Services Administration (GSA) is seeking a new steward for the historic Light Station Boston at no cost.
After determining that the lighthouse was excess to the needs of the United States Coast Guard (USCG), the GSA has created an opportunity for organizations to assume care and maintenance of the iconic site. Notably, there is no price tag attached, with the listing only requiring that the applicant be an eligible entity to manage the structure.
Eligible entities include:
- Federal agencies.
- State and local agencies.
- Non-profit corporations.
- Educational agencies.
- Community development organizations.
These applicants may oversee site administration for a variety of purposes, including educational, park, recreational, cultural or historic preservation. To be considered, entities must first submit a written letter of interest before receiving an application to assume custody of the property.
Completed applications are due within 90 days of the date of the site inspection. The National Park Service (NPS) will review applicants and recommend best-fit options to the Secretary of the Interior for approval. Applicants must provide the following information alongside their submission:
- Four complete components of the organization’s master plan for the site, including the preservation and maintenance plan, use plan, financial plan and management plan.
- A detailed succession plan if the applicant is a non-profit organization.
- Evidence of engagement with tribal/indigenous groups if appliable.
- How the applicant will comply with Section 2321(b) of the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 1989, Pub., L. 101-225 (Dec. 12, 1989).
- A summary of previous historic preservation experience or expertise.
The 310-year-old Light Station Boston is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse of its kind still standing in America. The structure is located on Little Brewster Island. The new owner will assume control over the light station’s six primary structures: the lighthouse tower, the boathouse, the keeper’s quarters, the sound signal building, the cistern building and a small oil house.
