Illinois targets transportation infrastructure in new funding round

August 18, 2026

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has made $157 million available to support local transportation improvement projects across the state. Applications are due by Oct. 5.

The Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) will fund efforts to improve connectivity and multimodal movement at the local level. These efforts will play into the state’s concerted effort to address its aging transportation system, revitalizing communities by modernizing and expanding essential transportation infrastructure.

Local governments, regional planning commissions and nonprofit and private entities with a public sponsor are eligible to apply for funding. Project types that may receive state support include:

  • On- and off-road pedestrian and bicycle facilities.
  • Sidewalks.
  • Converting abandoned railroad corridors to trails.
  • Streetscapes.
  • Preserving and rehabilitating historic transportation facilities.
  • Managing vegetation in transportation rights-of-way.
  • Archaeological activities relating to impacts from implementation of a transportation project.
  • Managing and controlling storm water and preventing or abating water pollution related to highway construction or due to highway runoff.
  • Reducing vehicle-caused wildlife mortality or restoring and maintaining connectivity among terrestrial or aquatic habitats.
  • Building turnouts, overlooks and viewing areas.

IDOT will provide a maximum of $5 million per project. The state has determined that at least 25% of recipients must be located in disadvantaged and economically distressed communities.
