Illinois opening notice of funding opportunity for flood mitigation, housing safety improvements

The State of Illinois is distributing $26.5 million to help improve access to safer housing across the state. 

The federal funds are being made available through the state’s Community Development Block Grant Program via the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Funding is being awarded to grantees selected through a competitive Notice of Funding Opportunity process. 

Grants are being awarded for both housing rehabilitation and public infrastructure projects. Grant applications will be accepted until Dec. 4. 

Eligible applicants can apply for public infrastructure grants from $300,000 to $1 million and housing rehabilitation grants from $300,000 to $650,000. 

Public infrastructure projects include construction of storm sewer pipes, waterline replacements, water storage tank construction, and other critical projects that help mitigate flooding and support sewage management, water delivery and other public water necessities. 

Housing rehabilitation projects include structural work, lead remediation, electrical, plumbing, new appliances, flooring, ADA, and accessibility accommodations, and more. 

An additional $1.9 million will be available for economic development projects funded by the CDBG on an as-needed basis. This includes up to $1 million t projects including construction, reconstruction, and installation or rehabilitation of commercial or industrial buildings, structures and other real property. 

Applications for economic development funding will be accepted on a rolling basis.
