Wake County Commissioners in North Carolina have approved the design for the upcoming $16.1 million Crowder County Park expansion project. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2027.
The plan envisions a 96-acre expansion onto the existing park, providing new trails, facilities and recreation opportunities for residents. The project will be split across two phases, prioritizing nature preservation, access enhancement, play structures and other educational features.
Plans include building a park center with an attached learning deck. The structure will include flexible classroom and meeting spaces and dedicated rooms for staff and staff support. The project will feature building support services, exterior and interior public restrooms, a lobby and nature exhibit space.
The project will build a signalized pedestrian crossing on Ten Ten Road, including a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) system. The Master Plan outlines approximately 80 new parking spaces across the expansion to accommodate visitors.
Additional features will include miles of natural surface and paved trails throughout the park and a greenway connector that will eventually connect to Cary’s greenway system. The county will also build a northern pond overlook alongside boardwalk and overlook approaches.
The county plans to establish a 4,500-square-foot nature play area and rain and educational garden areas across the site. The design also calls for a new bridge over Dutchman’s Branch, a shade garden by the pond, renovating the maintenance building and installing a picnic shelter.
