Texas awards $25M to UTHealth Houston to enhance recovery housing

January 6, 2026

UTHealth Houston will receive $25 million in state funding to expand and enhance recovery housing resources, assisting individuals recovering from an opioid use disorder.

Delivered by the Texas Opioid Abatement Fund Council (OAFC), the funding will enable recipients to increase access to recovery homes that provide a safe, stable environment for rehabilitating patients.

The university will use the funds to increase the amount and availability of Level 2 or 3 recovery homes across the state, offering case management, wraparound services and medications for opioid use disorder.

UTHealth will establish a three-year term with an optional two-year extension as part of the final agreement.

The OAFC, established in 2021, oversees the fair and equal delivery of money recovered through opioid settlement agreements to address the opioid crisis with dependable, evidence-based solutions. The Council is made up of 13 members appointed by the Texas Comptroller.
