University of Missouri approves $83M outpatient expansion in Columbia

February 12, 2026

The University of Missouri System Board of Curators approved an $83 million project to upgrade and renovate the Keene Street Medical Center and Health Pavilion in Columbia, setting in motion a long-term plan to expand outpatient services at the east Columbia campus.

University leaders say the improvements are part of a broader effort to shift lower-acuity outpatient services to community locations while concentrating critical and complex care at University Hospital.

The Keene Street facility currently supports a range of services, including outpatient surgery, infusion therapy, MRI, pharmacy and neurology. MU Health Care plans to add CT scans and expanded radiology to the Keene Street offerings.

The project comes after women’s and pediatric services moved from the Keene Street campus to the main University Hospital campus and into its new Women’s and Children’s Hospital. With that transition complete, officials are now focused on modernizing the aging building in anticipation of growing patient demand.

Planned infrastructure improvements include exterior skin and roof replacement, water line and heating system upgrades, fire alarm system improvements, and elevator repairs. Early renovation stages are expected to be completed by 2029, with the rest of the work phased in over approximately 10 years.

The $83 million project will be financed with $74 million from MU Health Care reserves and $9 million in debt funding. Officials said renovating the existing building is faster and more cost effective than constructing a new freestanding outpatient facility. MU Health Care is among the largest operating units within the University of Missouri System and is largely self-funded through patient revenues.
