TDOT unveils Celina truck route project to enhance transit efficiency

April 15, 2026

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is nearing the end of the design phase for its $25.3 million State Route 52 Celina Truck Route road project. Construction is expected to begin later this year.

The department plans to build a bypass around a section of SR-52 cutting through downtown Celina, providing a truck route along a new alignment. The 0.86-mile project will extend from a point near Kyle Street to reconnect with SR-52 close to Washington Street.

The current road alignment for SR-52 along that corresponding section lacks the capacity needed for safe freight and transit. Narrow turns have caused large trucks and other vehicles to collide with the corners of buildings, making the roadway a hazard for drivers.

The project calls for building a bridge over West Lake Avenue and creating a two-lane alignment for the roadway. In addition, TDOT will build four retaining walls, on-site wetland and stream mitigation and acquire right-of-way from 26 properties. The right-of-way will result in six residential relocations.

Once completed, the truck route will provide a critical diversion for truck traffic volume in the area. This truck outlet will help bolster the city’s business district while providing a more efficient and less congested route for local motorists.
