County officials in Marshall County, Alabama, will receive $16.2 million in federal support through the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant program for a $19.2 million bridge replacement project.
Backed by federal dollars, the county will be able to move forward with its plan to replace the Swayback Bridge. The aging structure – originally built in the 1960s – has a design that is no longer conducive to modern travel needs. Due to its narrow profile and sharp curvatures, the county has determined the need to make significant changes to ensure safe, efficient travel.
The planned replacement bridge will span 1,000 feet, more than double the length of the current structure. It will also be 40 feet wide and stand more than 150 feet high. As a result, the new bridge will have wider lanes and shoulders.
In addition to replacing the bridge itself, the county will remove and repave 2,000 feet of connecting roadway. Project details also include improving roadway geometry, enhancing safety features and relocating and upgrading a water line under the bridge deck.
The county plans to demolish the existing bridge and construct its replacement along the same alignment.
