Sugar Land moves into design phase for roadway reconstruction initiative

June 10, 2026

Sugar Land is advancing the Austin Parkway project into its second phase, planning to spend $7.9 million to reconstruct the roadway. After approving a design contract for the project at its June 2 meeting, the city anticipates beginning construction in summer 2027.

The Austin Parkway initiative is funded through the voter-approved $865.6 million 2023 bond program from Fort Bend County and the city’s own $350 million general obligation bond in 2024.

The project will reconstruct the Austin Parkway road, primarily to extend the useful life of the pavement infrastructure. Aside from street reconstruction, the city will also build a 10-foot side path along one side of the street.

The city will implement a series of drainage improvements to the project site. These drainage improvements will follow the recommendations of previous engineering studies.

In addition, the project will include panel replacements for the boulevard with a 32-foot median.
