The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration has awarded $39.7 million to Tradepoint Atlantic and Terminal Investment Ltd. for a container yard expansion and cargo-handling equipment at the Sparrows Point site in Baltimore County.
The project covers 330 acres planned for a terminal, container yard and support facilities as part of the redevelopment of the former Bethlehem Steel property.
According to project materials, the funding would create an expansion of container handling capacity by 70%, helping position the Port of Baltimore for additional East Coast cargo traffic.
Officials said the development is expected to support thousands of jobs, including about 1,100 union positions tied to terminal operations.
Grant funds also will be used to purchase cargo-moving equipment, including terminal tractors, bomb carts, container handlers and top picks.
The latest award follows earlier federal investments at Sparrows Point, including nearly $9.9 million announced in 2020 for infrastructure improvements tied to the site’s redevelopment.
Tradepoint Atlantic has been transforming the former steel mill property into a logistics, manufacturing and maritime hub since acquiring the site in 2014.
