Nikesh Patel: Ensuring meaningful, lasting impacts in Public Works

Strategic Partnerships, Inc. salutes you, public sector officials: The Profiles in Power section spotlights and recognizes powerful figures across America’s public sector landscape. This week’s Profile in Power is of Nikesh Patel, Director of Public Works for the City of Sarasota, Florida.

My public career highlights and education

I serve as Director of Public Works for the City of Sarasota, leading infrastructure, engineering, transportation, and operations. With over 22 years of experience, my work focuses on resilient systems, multimodal mobility, and sustainable growth. I hold advanced degrees in engineering and maintain multiple professional credentials across engineering, planning, construction, and public administration.

What I like best about public service

Public service is about delivering meaningful, lasting impact. Public Works directly affects daily life — safe streets, reliable infrastructure, and community resilience. At its core, the work is about people, service, and maintaining a high standard of care and pride in the community we serve.

Some of the best advice I have ever received

Focus on solving the root problem, not just managing the issue. Effective leadership requires understanding complexity, building strong relationships, and pursuing balanced, outcome-driven solutions that serve the broader public interest.

Something I wish more people knew about my division of government

Public Works operates largely behind the scenes, yet it is foundational to a city’s function and growth. It spans infrastructure delivery, development review, emergency response, and long-term planning — ensuring communities remain safe, resilient, and prepared for future challenges.

A current project or initiative that I am working on

Current priorities include advancing coastal resiliency, stormwater infrastructure, and complete streets, while managing FEMA-related recovery efforts from recent 2024 hurricanes. This includes undergrounding utilities on barrier islands, coordinating with USACE on beach renourishment, and overseeing over $40 million in regional stormwater partnerships with Sarasota County.

One thing outside of government service people may not know about me

Outside of work, I value time with my family and live on a small farm caring for over 25 animals. That experience reinforces principles of responsibility, stewardship, and balance — values that carry into my professional approach.
