The Local Government Commission (LGC) in North Carolina has approved the financial applications for almost $530 million for projects across multiple counties. The bonds may be used for school improvements, park construction, water infrastructure projects and other public service initiatives.
Orange County has received approval for $378 million in bonds, primarily for school constructions, expansions and enhancements.
Orange County Schools has received permission to use $125 million to replace a middle school, an elementary school or build a new elementary school. An additional $175 million would support Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools’ efforts to replace three elementary schools. Orange County may use the remaining $78 million for maintenance and equipment projects in the county, city schools and Sportsplex.
With funding greenlit, High Point in Guilford County has been afforded $40 million. The money can be used to make water and sewer system extensions, additions and various capital improvements. Asheville in Buncombe County may now use $35 million to reimburse itself for improvements to its baseball field.
Another $22 million was approved to finance multiple projects in New Hanover County. These may include building:
- Northern Regional Park with multipurpose fields, restrooms, a track and a parking lot.
- Smith Creek Park with a trail, nature play, environmental education elements, a shelter and a restroom.
- Trail End’s Pier with a new pier and kayak launch.
The Raleigh Housing Authority has been given permission to use $19 million to support the development of multifamily residential rental units. Union County may spend $13 million to expand court and office space at the Judicial Center and Government Center. Catawba County may use $9.4 million to consolidate and expand a medical center’s outpatient medical services.
