The University of South Dakota (USD) will spend between $45 million and $50 million to build an indoor track and field facility. The project, which is currently in the design phase, is slated for construction in September.
The state-of-the-art facility – called the Gassen Family Fieldhouse – will serve as a premier venue for supporting student-athlete training and recovery, hosting competitions and community events and driving economic growth. The building will contain a 200-meter banked track alongside two perimeter warm-up lanes and a 60-meter straightaway.
The project vision calls for building two long jump/triple jump pits, a pair of pole vaulting stations, two high jumps over straightaways and two throwing cages. The university plans to incorporate coach offices, a recruiting lounge, a training and nutrition center and locker rooms into the facility’s design.
Once completed, the building will provide elevated seating for up to 2,000 spectators over a viewing concourse providing a picturesque perspective over all events below. USD will also build batting cages and practice tennis courts to further support its softball and tennis programs.
The university recently received a significant amount of state funding for the project, slated for a $40 million appropriation from a bill signed on Feb. 24, 2026. The fieldhouse project has already received more than $20 million raised by the university to kick off construction later this year.
