The South Hadley Elementary School Building Committee in Masschusetts has proposed a $113 million rebuild project for Mosier Elementary School.
The next step is for the project team to submit the Preferred Schematic Report (PSR) to the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA). Should it receive approval, the full design phase can begin with construction slated for 2028.
MSBA officials identified the current Mosier Elementary School as a site of high priority for the state’s efforts to build modern, cost-effective and energy-efficient education facilities. It was one of 19 other schools that were recognized for quick investment in needed infrastructure improvements, replacement or deferred maintenance. The state plans to reimburse South Hadley Public Schools (SHPS) for associated project costs, pending final approvals and financing.
Should the project move forward, SHPA would reconfigure the grades between several district school, including Skala and Mosier elementary schools, Michael E. Smith Middle School and South Hadley High School.
Alternative No. 8 – “Mosier on Mosier” – was selected as the final design alternative for the project earlier this year. The two-story building would house grades one through five, providing ample room for education, administration and athletics across 113,745 gross square feet.
The first floor of the building would include a main entrance leading into a lobby with various administrative spaces, medical, staff and faculty offices, conference rooms and restrooms. Educational spaces would be split between core academic and special education classrooms. Additional areas would be dedicated to art, music and other vocations.
The layout includes space for a 6,000-square-foot gymnasium and a cafeteria with attached kitchen, storage, food service and stage areas. Additional rooms would be allocated for mechanical systems and various other academic or staffing needs.
The second floor of the building would follow a similar layout, prioritizing classrooms for core academic and special education learning. The floor notably includes a sizable media center alongside custodial and maintenance rooms, administration and guidance areas, restrooms, circulation, storage and other spaces.
The structure’s exterior would include a playground area, paved play space and a parent drop off zone along a dedicated parent route. An athletics field would neighbor the campus, providing ample space for a soccer field, small baseball diamond and refurbished fields. SHPA would build new roads and sidewalks to accommodate students and drivers.
Additional details would include installing water, electric and data, gas and sewer infrastructure across the campus. The layout would provide new site access points for buses, parents, install a generator, dumpsters and implement regrading work to surrounding greenspace.
