The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has awarded $25 million to help the city of Chattanooga, Tenn., deploy an autonomous vehicle (AV) shuttle service in the downtown area.
The Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) will receive and utilize the funding.
Plans call for deploying up to six AV shuttles throughout the city’s downtown area. The shuttles will function without drivers, following pre-established transit routes. CARTA will connect the vehicles to the city’s Mobility and Innovation Command Center.
As part of a holistic system, the shuttles will benefit from real-time oversight, emergency incident response and data-driven transit optimization.
The FTA is delivering the funding through the $1.7 billion Better Utilizing Investment to Leverage Development (BUILD) program. Announced in July, the latest round of BUILD funding is supporting 127 projects transportation infrastructure projects across the nation.
