The Bistone Municipal Water Supply District (MWSD) in Texas will spend $29.4 million to upgrade its water transmission infrastructure. Construction is expected to begin in 2027.
The district will start with a series of improvements to the local water transmission system, including the replacement of roughly 40,000 linear feet of outdated 16-inch steel cylinder concrete transmission pipeline. Once replaced, the MWSD will be able to prevent future leaks and ensure water reliability for more than 12,000 residents.
The project vision calls for creating a new re-pressurization system to maintain steady water pressure throughout the MWSD. The district will also evaluate elevated storage tank and hydropneumatic pressure systems to further ensure service is consistent, reliable and maintained for optimal performance during peak demand and emergencies.
Plans include managing environmental reviews, property acquisition and construction administration to maintain compliance with Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) standards. The completed project will significantly improve the 60-year-old system’s resiliency to ensure operation in drought and emergencies.
Water systems across the state have been suffering from similar issues related to outdated designs and infrastructure. The MWSD’s efforts are merely the latest in the state’s plan to address longstanding vulnerabilities in rural water systems.
The project builds off a separate $16 million project in 2024 that drilled up to 10 groundwater wells in the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer and completing several transmission mains. The finished product conveys water to the district’s existing groundwater treatment facility, establishing a portfolio of modern infrastructure to expand groundwater supply and ensure transmission and storage infrastructure is prepared for modern needs.
