The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has opened an $88 million Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to develop shared-use research facilities or research-supporting facilities. Applications are due by Jan. 25, 2028.
The NOFO supports two distinct construction programs designed to support different research fields. These include the Biomedical Research Facilities (BRF) program and the HIV/AIDS Research Facilities (HRF) program.
The BRF program enables recipients to build or modernize biomedical research facilities geared to elevate basic, translational, clinical or behavioral science research. These structures include shared research spaces, core facilities, biorepositories or other relevant shared-use resource facilities intended to deliver long-term impacts on biomedical research.
The HRF program will prioritize infrastructure accommodating HIV/AIDS research or research-supporting resources. Qualifying research must align with the NIH Office of AIDS Research priorities.
Eligible applicants include:
- State governments.
- County governments.
- Municipal governments.
- Public and Indian housing authorities.
- Native American tribal governments and organizations.
- Special district governments.
- Independent school districts.
- Public, state and private institutions of higher education.
- Nonprofits non-higher education with/without 501(c)(3).
- Small businesses.
- For-profit organizations other than small businesses.
The NIH anticipates distributing up to 14 awards. Each grant will range between a minimum of $2 million and a maximum of $8 million.
