White House commits $5B to AI-driven Genesis Mission

July 29, 2026

The White House has announced the next steps for the federal Genesis Mission, committing more than $5 billion in new funding to the national initiative to solve scientific problems with artificial intelligence.

Fifteen federal agencies — including the Departments of Health and Human Services, Energy, Transportation, Defense and Interior — will use the funding to identify the root causes of chronic diseases, accelerate drug discovery and develop longer-lasting building materials, among other goals, the White House said.

The $5 billion is part of a broader policy blueprint released last week by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). The report, titled “Science: A New Golden Age,” calls for a fundamental reshaping of how the federal government funds research, and shifts support away from large legacy institutions and toward individual scientists and AI-driven discovery.

Scientists will have access to the Department of Energy’s supercomputers, AI tools and specialized datasets to run experiments using algorithms, said Michael Kratsios, OSTP director.

The directives are expected to shape roughly $200 billion in annual federal research and development spending across the government for the remainder of Trump’s second term. Federal agencies are required to submit implementation plans within 90 days and incorporate the new priorities into their fiscal year 2028 budget proposals.
