The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced a nearly $55 million injection to bolster community resilience, restore critical infrastructure and support disaster mitigation measures in Florida.
The agency will distribute the funding across three major programs:
- Public Assistance Program.
- Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.
- Disaster Case Management Program.
The Public Assistance Program will provide the lion’s share of Florida’s funding, including more than $30 million to accelerate response times to emergencies and improve infrastructure resilience. The following are a selection of projects benefitting from the program.
The Florida Division of Emergency Management will receive almost $7 million for disaster recovery and repair initiatives. Plans include removing debris and repairing wastewater systems damaged by Hurricane Ian and other storms.
Lee County will spend $6.2 million to shore up infrastructure projects. Most of the funding will directly support the county’s efforts to reconstruct the Fort Myers Beach Fishing Pier and Bait House.
Hillsborough County will use $3.5 million to implement emergency protective measures needed after Hurricane Helene. The county will prioritize clearing debris among these measures. In addition, St. Petersburg will receive $1.4 million to support fire department emergency response operations following Hurricane Milton.
FEMA will deliver more than $15 million through the Disaster Case Management (DCM) program. The DCM operates on a smaller scale compared to similar disaster relief programs, prioritizing individuals and households impacted by inclement weather. Survivors are given the tools and resources they need to recover, working with a case manager to address unmet needs.
The remaining $8 million from FEMA’s funding injection will be delivered through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. As part of the state’s efforts to prevent or mitigate future disaster damage, Florida will coordinate the investments across multiple projects. A selection of notable projects include:
- Providing almost $2 million to help elevate six homes in Tampa flood-prone areas.
- Delivering more than $1.5 million to enhance 125 sanitary lift stations at-risk in the city of Sanibel.
- Investing more than $800,000 to help Hillsborough County strengthen wind-resistance and install generators.
