California authorizes funding for new courthouse in San Joaquin County

July 22, 2026

San Joaquin County in California is a step closer to replacing a courthouse in Tracy that has been shuttered for more than 15 years.

The state’s FY 2027 budget includes funding to move the project to build a two-room facility forward, marking a major step toward restoring court services in Tracy after more than a decade without a working courthouse.

The budget shows $3.5 million in general fund support for the planning phase, with a total project authorization of $65.8 million.

The project includes the construction of an approximately 28,000-square-foot two-courtroom courthouse. The project includes secure parking for judicial officers and surface parking spaces with solar power generation capability.

The new courthouse will help restore local access to court services, improve safety and accessibility, and better serve south county communities, officials said.

With planning funding now allocated, the next phase will involve planning and designing the courthouse. No timeline for construction has been set.

The courthouse closed in October 2011 due to severe state budget cuts to the judicial branch, part of a broader statewide budget crisis that impacted courts across California. The building also had outdated facilities that could not keep up with the caseload.
