The Iowa Board of Regents approved multiple infrastructure projects across all three universities during a meeting last week.
A cornerstone of these planned projects includes modernization of a several vital facilities along with an emphasis to civic education. The Commons, the original student union of the University of Northern Iowa, was built in 1932 and renovated in 1965. Regents estimated the project could cost up to $35 million to transform the beloved structure into the new home for UNI’s Center for Civic Education. The current student union is housed in the Maucker Union building.
The new center is part of the Regents’ recent emphasis on civic literacy and free speech. It will serve as a hub for curricular innovation, faculty development and outreach to K-12 schools across the state, as well as being home to Constitution Day observance and the Joy Cole Corning Lectures series.
The renovation will preserve the building’s historic character while introducing significant updates, including a more prominent entrance, enhanced ADA-compliant access, modern technologies and upgraded interior and exterior finishes.
UNI’s Commons project will be funded through a combination of Rebuild Iowa Infrastructure funds, General Education Renewal funds, and Treasurer’s Temporary Investment Income.
Several other Iowa Regent schools are planning future developments, demolitions and expansions. The board will continue to evaluate several of the following projects:
