The University of Virginia recently received the philanthropic support needed to advance its $20 million Darden Faculty Office Building renovation project. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2027.
The project vision calls for installing a winter garden in the facility’s north courtyard. The garden will function as a living room for faculty, students and visitors. Plans include building a two-story space with flexible seating and ample light.
The university will further redesign the north entry to reorient its position and reconstruct the interior stairs. The work will create a more intuitive flow from nearby parking and housing, making it easier for faculty and students to access academic centers. Plans include building a new southeast entry and patio, connecting the facility to the upcoming Darden Park.
In addition, the university will build a large seminar room and multiple conference rooms and collaboration zones across the building. These spaces will accentuate cross-disciplinary work and engagement with visitors. The interior of the building will be reimagined to encourage movement, informal interaction and collaboration across all floors.
The project will include a series of improved wellness and support spaces, including wellness and mothers’ rooms and enhanced restrooms. Plans call for updated finishes and lighting and transparency throughout the building.
The university will provide updates while the project progresses through the predevelopment phases.
