The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) will deliver $465.8 million to support Amtrak’s efforts to modernize Washington Union Station in downtown Washington D.C. The funding will primarily target key renovation work, enabling Amtrak to implement the first set of a series of improvements designed to accommodate development over the next two decades.
The modernization project will focus on the Claytor Concourse – a cornerstone facet of D.C.’s intercity and commuter transit. However, after decades of operation, Washington Union Station has become congested and must expand to improve passenger experience and handle increasingly larger volumes of transit users.
The Washington Union Station Concourse Modernization Project has been in the works for years. Once completed, the project will double concourse capacity to alleviate congestion and improve overall comfort and accessibility.
Project details include updating the station’s architectural finishes, adding more natural light, restrooms, space for support service, upgrading equipment and building a premium lounge area. Amtrak also plans to develop a new Acela fleet to increase service frequency.
USDOT’s nearly $466 million investment will advance various immediate improvements as part of the federal government’s efforts to modernize and beautiful the capital’s main transportation hub. These include:
- Fast-tracking critical structural repairs.
- Improving the passenger concourse, the Amtrak lounge and the ticketing experience.
- Prioritizing revenue potential with retail, parking, office spaces, digital signage and other opportunities.
- Enhancing security.
- Investing in family-friendly infrastructure.
These improvements will ensure the station remains in a state of good repair while paving the way for future development. Among these projects, Amtrak will replace the station’s aging roof, make near-term repairs to the passenger concourse and repair the parking garage and station interior.
