The Multnomah County Board of Commissioners in Oregon unanimously voted to approve a proposal to select a development partner for the Walnut Park redevelopment project.
In 2018, the county started evaluating future development possibilities for the Walnut Park complex, located at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Northeast Killingsworth Street. The process included input from community members, service recipients and staff, and resulted in the 2022 Redevelopment Feasibility Study. The conceptual plan proposed a variety of mixed-use spaces, including housing, ground-floor retail, office space, community areas and expanded county services, according to county officials.
The project is part of a broader vision to revitalize the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Killingsworth Street.
The county will release a draft request for proposals within the next month, and officials will select a developer in the fall, according to the release.
Beginning in October, the selected development partner will spend 12 to 18 months preparing a project proposal that will outline financing strategies, address long-term planning and on-site program needs, and evaluate ownership trade-offs or leasing options. Once completed, the selected partner must submit the proposal to the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners for approval.
County officials said that the current stage of the proposal development will cost $150,000 in general funds, which the board has already approved. The total project cost is still unknown, according to the release.
